The Bible warned about the devil walking around like a roaring lion seeking who he may devour. (1 Peter.5:8) Devil is believer’s adversary because his walking around is majorly targeted at believer of Jesus Christ, the image of God. Since the devil was driven out of the heaven as a result of his unrepented sin against God, (Isaiah.14:12) he has not stopped looking for ways to launch attack on the people of God. Like the serpent that he is, he commences his attack in a subtle way through temptation. He instils deceptive thoughts that can lead to doubt, worry, fear and all sort of negative thoughts in the mind of an individual believer. Once he is able to capture the mind, he begins to manipulate the person to commit sin against God so as to separate him from God. Once the person’s soul is separated, he is unable to seek for help and therefore becomes helpless. The strategy used to destroy the first Adam. Jesus, the second Adam was not speared of the devil’s temptation. The Bible says, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” (Matt.4:1) Glory be to God, Jesus overcame the devil, and the devil left Him. (Matt.4:11) There is no doubt that Jesus overcame the devil due to His obedience, humility and total submission to the will of God. The perspective of that conclusion is asserted by Jesus’ declaration that He has come down from heaven, not to do His own will, but the will of Him who sent Him. No wonder Apostle James says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) Once one is able to resist the devil’s temptation, he will not be able to attack and he will flee. To submit to God means to willingly recognise God as the ultimate in one’s life and acknowledge Jesus’s Christ authority and His Lordship. To be obedient to God’s word and follow His guidance. To allow God’s will and His desire to prevail. Submitting to God is a sign of humility, trust and obedience to God. The Bible tells us that Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death on the cross. (Phil.2:8) To resist the devil is a command to believers. The Scripture says, “Resist the devil” (James 4:7b) It says again, “Resist him, steadfast in the faith....” (1 Peter.5:9a) It is a command because Christians have been given power and authority that comes through the power of the gospel, and Christ working in him, (Phil.4:13) which empowers him to be able to resist the devil. The power to resist the devil also lies on the assurance that God will not allow His people to be tempted beyond that which he is able to endure as He will provide the way of escape. (1 Cor.10:13) Above all, God has not given the devil power to subject God’s people to his will, therefore devil has no power to keep Christians away from God. It is therefore the responsibility of individual believer to act against the temptation of the devil. Brethren, God has not given the devil power to force his will on you, but instead He has given you power to overcome the pranks of the devil and his likes. He has also assured you that He will make a way of escape for you when the devil comes to tempt you. It therefore behoves on you to be sober, to be vigilant and to resist the devil as you totally submit to God. May the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory by Jesus Christ, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. Amen Evangelism Encourage someone today to resist the devil and come to Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and the life. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
