The disposition to willingly hear the word of God as proclaimed by the scriptures identifies one as who seek the truth. The word of God is truth. (John. 17:17) The character of those who are of God is in the fact that they have a willing mind to listen to the word of God. Not only that they listen to the word, but they also understand and believe the word. Jesus says, “He who is of God hears God’s words...” (John.8:47a) Jesus told the unbelieving pharisees that their lack of understanding of His word was due to lack of listening. He says, “Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.” (John.8:43) In the same manner, believer that is not disposed to willingly listen to the word of God cannot understand God’s word. The emphasis on understanding and obeying God is solely on listening to His word. The attitude of the Jewish believers in Berea towards the word of God serves as a good example for believers who are willing to listen to God’s word. The Berean believers were fair-minded that they willingly received the preaching of Apostles Paul and Silas. Not only that they willingly received the word, but they also daily investigate the word to see if they were true. Because of their investigation of the word of God, they understood, believed and they were able to obey the word of the gospel. (Acts.17:11) It explains the fact that if one is truly a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, he will listen to the voice of the Shepherd, Jesus Christ. He will by no means follow a stranger he does not know his voice as described by Jesus (John.10:5) One who does not listen to God’s word according to Jesus’s teaching, is not of God. Those that are not of God would listen to the religious inventions of men thereby reject the truth of the gospel through which they can seek God’s direction. Listening to God’s word is not limited to preaching or teaching only, it also includes every of songs rendered during praise and worship service. It is not enough to dance to rhythm of music during worship and praise service, listening and understanding the wordings of the song is equally important. If one must worship God in spirit and in truth, the attitude of the heart and mind must be tuned to God who is Spirit. (John.4:24) True praise and worship is not mere form and ceremony, but spiritual reality that must be in harmony with God’s word. Brethren, the Bible is the written Word, the Word is the living Jesus Christ of Nazareth. (John.1:1) Any word outside the written Word is not of God. Listening and understanding His word helps one to grow in faith and have deeper relationship with God. A deeper relationship with God guides one’s steps and show the path on which one is to walk. His word gives one the required spiritual guidance through which one can experience the love, joy and peace of the Lord in this world and also get strengthened for the kingdom journey. Above all, it safeguards one from the religious inventions of men. Jesus told the unbelieving pharisees that their lack of understanding of His word was due to lack of listening to His word. May the grace to listen and understand God’s word fall on you and everyone afresh this day, in Jesus gracious name. Amen Evangelism Listen to Jesus Christ, He is calling you. You too can accept Him today. He is waiting for you. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
