A leper came among the multitude and worshipped Jesus, he thereafter says to Jesus “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying “I am willing: be cleansed.” (Matt.8:1-3) This tells us that God is always willing to be our help, if only we see Him as our helper and we abide in His will. In the Old Testament, leprosy was considered ritually unclean situation and often associated with sin and punishment. One can therefore say that the man with leprosy received healing through forgiveness of his sin and was restored or saved back to the community. The leprosy man’s request for healing from Jesus expressed his believe and trust that Jesus can help him if He so will. The leprosy man did not give any excuse or tell story of his past good deeds; he only relied on Jesus’s willingness. He did not act like Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of Syria who also had leprosy but initially refused to trust the directives of Elisha, the prophet of God. (2 Kings.5:10) The Bible says, the man became furious and he left in his own anger. He, however, got healed when he repented and complied with the directives of the prophet. (2 Kings.5:12-14) The Naman initial mindset to condemn Elisha’s directives is the way many see their Salvation. They see salvation as being too real and simple to be true. They have not come to the realization that the New Covenant that brough salvation relied on the grace of God and faith in Jesus Christ. They therefore did not see it to be sufficient and powerful enough. The Bible says, “In God is our salvation and our glory, the rock of our strength and our refuge is in God” (Psalm.62:7) They have therefore not seen the reason to seek for God’s willingness to help. Seeking for God’s help signifies one’s total trust and unshakeable faith in God’s ability to provide help in His own way. Naman could not receive his healing when he was expecting Prophet Elisha to perform the healing according to his own expectation. Many want their help done in their own way. They command and direct God on what and how to do what. It is good to note that trusting God does not mean that one must be redundant in taking decisions, but when it comes to matters that are beyond one’s earthly wisdom and understanding, matters that require supernatural intervention, one should let God. He is always willing. God says in His word, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me.” (Psalm.50:15) To a true child of God, this word of God is so assuring that God is willing to keep His children under His care. But when one decides to keep oneself under one’s own care, one misses the way and is tossed here and there. Brethren, our Lord Jesus Christ says, “Ask, and it shall be given to you, seek, and you will find, knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matt.7:7) Like the leprosy man, let us ask that we may receive. God is always willing to help, if only we can trust and rely on Him. Evangelism Jesus Christ is willing to set you free. Visit a Bible believing Church for assistance.
