The expression of the troubled world, the world where nations are waging war against nations, where insufficiency and lack have no boundary has in the past few weeks suddenly changed to that of hope, happiness, and joy in anticipation of the Christmas celebration, despite all the uncertainties. The happy and joyful expression is not limited to the follower of Jesus Christ alone, but to all mankind. The mood affirmed the fact that Jesus Christ came to save the whole world. It brings to mind also, the grace of God that is made available to mankind, and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ to save the whole world from destruction as a result of their sins against God. The Bible says, “For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John.3:16) Just as the birth of Jesus Christ into the world could not be denied even by those that refused to accept Him as their Savior and Lord, so also is the season of Christmas cannot be ignored. The season of Christmas is recognised and celebrated by the whole world. Jesus is truly the reason for the season. Though Christmas is a season that is full of joy, happiness, merriment and celebration, it should not be limited to moment of merriment and celebration alone. Christmas is a moment to reflect on Jesus Christ and the purpose of His coming to the earth. The suffering He went through and His blood that was shed on the Cross. His death, burial and resurrection which is the basis of the Christian faith. A time to remember that Jesus came to reconcile man through Himself as the Way to God the Father. He says, “I am the Way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John.14:6) It is also time to recognise the fact that one cannot devise his own system of religion to be saved on his own condition. It is only through Jesus Christ that one can be saved. (Act.4:12) Jesus is the revelation of the grace and truth that proceed from God for the salvation of all men. “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John.1:17) For one to have life through eternity, one must come into covenant relationship with Jesus. The Bible says, “He who has the Son has life, he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John.5:12) The abundant and everlasting joy being awaited is His second coming, when He will eternally stay with those that accept Him as their Lord and Savior. (John.14:2-3) The present expression of happiness and joy everywhere is because Christmas spirit is a spirit of giving and forgiving. A spirit of love, generosity and of goodness. God gave His only begotten Son because of His goodness and love for mankind. He expresses His generosity by making His grace through which mankind can receive forgiveness of sin through repentance available for all. Christmas would have been well celebrated if one continues to walk in the light. (1 John.1:7) That is, if one continues to conduct himself in a manner that will bring him into conformity with Jesus Christ who is the light, and to continue to walk in obedience to the word of God, which is the condition for receiving the blessing of continuous cleansing of sin. The atoning blood of Jesus that keeps on cleansing those who keep on walking in obedience to the word of God. Again, Christmas would have been well celebrated if one expresses one’s love to others through giving, caring and forgiving others. Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” (John.13:34) Loving others is a proof of one’s identity as true follower of Jesus Christ who out of love laid down His life for mankind. (1 John.3:16) Evangelism Spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others as a show of love. Do that today and be blessed. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
