Christian faith, basis for Confidence

English word “Confidence” is made up of two Latin words, Con (with) and Fidere (faith). The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines confidence as the feeling that you can trust, believe in and be sure about the abilities or good qualities of somebody or something. The Bible describes faith as the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Heb.11:1) Christian confidence is rooted in the power of God. Not worldly self-confidence. Christian faith is therefore the basis for courage, boldness and confidence. Christians are to demonstrate confidence in their faith both physically and spiritually, because God has given Christians the spirit of boldness, love and of sound mind. Not a spirit of fear. (2 Tim.1:7) David was a good example of one who demonstrates confidence in his faith in God. David having witnessed how Goliath defied the people and the armies of Israel, and the fear and lack of courage exhibited by the people and armies of Israel, his inner persuasion (confidence) arose in him and decided to confront Goliath. He said to King Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him, your servant will go and fight with this philistine.” (1 Sam.17:32) He boldly approached Goliath with confidence, relying on his faith in the ability of the Lord, not his own ability. He said, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” (1 Sam.17:45) David defeated Goliath. How much confidence in Christ do you have as a Christian? Is it possible that your insufficient or lack of confidence is due to spiritual immaturity? Or could it be lack of sufficient knowledge of Christ and His written word? Whatever the reason or reasons may be, you are to make confidence a characteristic of your faith and boldly demonstrate the confidence in your daily living. To overcome insufficient or lack of confidence in God, draw near to Him to have personal and deep relationship with Him. Draw to Him with a true heart that is full of assurance of faith, heart that is willing to confess sin and be open towards God. (Heb.10:22) Heart that is willing to hold fast to the confession of hope in Christ Jesus without doubt, trusting that He is faithful to keep His promises (Heb.10:23) including the promise of His second coming. (John.14:3) Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, David did not allow the surrounding circumstances to demoralize him. His feeling of confidence in God made him to confront Goliath, and he triumphed. You too can confidently confront and triumph over whatever circumstances that may appear to be stumbling block in the new year and beyond. I urge you to demonstrate your inner persuasion in both your spiritual and physical life. Be confident to live a holy life by intentionally avoiding all forms of sin through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Be bold to approach the throne of grace for help to obtain mercy (Heb.4:16) through private and personal worship and prayer. Be confident to serve God, serve others and witness Jesus Christ to the loss. Be attentive to the Spirit of God in you, allow Him to direct and guide your daily living. Be confident to explore new opportunities concerning your career, trade, business, study, etc by applying the wisdom of God to your knowledge, that you may be prosperous. The Bible says, “Therefore, do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.” (Heb.10:35) Let your confidence in Christ Jesus remain alive. I pray, may your love for Christ increase as you journey in the year 2026. May your faith in Christ ignite confidence to triumph over every impediment in your way. May the new year bring bountiful testimonies that will glorify the name of the Lord in your life in Jesus mighty name. Amen Evangelism Today is the last day of the year 2025. I encourage you to give your life to Jesus Chris. Tomorrow may be too late. From TGSC, we wish you a Happy and Prosperous Year 2026 in advance. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
