A new creation in Christ is someone who has put his faith in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the will of God. He does things in the way of the Lord and not in the way of the flesh. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor.5:17) One is new in Christ not only because he has been washed of his sin through baptism, but also because of the change in his perspective of life after his positive response to the gospel. The Bible says, “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus was baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Rom.6:3, 4) The newness of life (Spiritual rebirth) that comes as a result of the baptism, is the testimonial of the transformation that have taken place. When someone becomes a new creation in Christ, he considers all things from God’s perspectives. New creation comes because one is baptized to into Christ. The Bible declares that “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” (Gal.3:27) In Christ, old things have passed away, a new creation is formed. (Gal.6:15) One becomes a new creation because the Spirit of God dwells in him as a result of his repentance and immersion into the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is no more in his old sinful form, but in the direction of God. (Rom.8:9) The new creation does not consider things according to the flesh anymore, but according to the spirit nature. It is in this new nature that Christians are reconciled to God and new relationship is established through Jesus Christ. However, it should be noted that it is God who originates the plan to redeem men from sin through the Cross, in order to provide atonement for their sin that separates them from Him. New creation does not happen as a result of one’s works, lest anyone should boast. It is by grace through faith which is the gift of God. (Eph.2:8,9) When the new creation is made manifest, the power to resist wrong behavior is installed. The new creature is by grace set free to live his life in holiness, give his life daily as worship to God and be transformed in his thinking by the power of the Holy Spirit. He does not think and live according to the way of the world but think and act in God’s way every day. The new creation in Christ is not instantly perfect, he still struggles against sin, he is however empowered to grow in holiness. The inner change helps him to drop the old sinful habits and put on a new nature that makes him to be righteous in the sight of God. Dear brethren, does your lifestyle reflect that of someone who is a new creation in Christ? If you are not sure, try to make a conscious decision not to allow the desire of the flesh to take control of your life. This is because sin does not reign in the person who has dedicated himself to live the life of thanksgiving to God for been made a new creation. (Rom.6:11-13) Therefore, you should refrain from living the life of those that have given themselves over to the lusts of the flesh so as to avoid the wrath of God. (Col.3:5,6) Remember, the grace of new creation does not liberate one to sin but gives freedom to obey.
