Songful worship is the act of using one’s voice and musical instrument to praise, honour, adore and reverence God through singing. The Greek word psalmos (Psalm) means sacred song accompanied with instrument, while the word humnos (Hymn) means song of praise addressed to God. Songful worship are songs composed through biblical words in psalms and hymns ensuring that both the spirit and the truth of God are present. While psalms and hymns are described as spiritual lyrics in songs, spiritual songs are those songs that exhort and edify the soul of man and bring him into a spirit of worship. Songs that are Spirit-prompted melodies or expressions of praise that bring forth the revelation of God's Word. The Bible describes songful worship as speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in one’s heart to the Lord. (Eph.5:19) Speaking to one another means that everyone participates in singing in psalms and hymns in order to focus on praising God. Making melody in one’s heart to the Lord is expressing in song the joy and praise of what the Lord has done in one’s life. The Bible says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Col.3:16) Apostle Paul explained that through the medium of song, teaching and admonition are expressed to one another as individual or as groups of believers. He says further that believers loving and thankful heart is portrayed through a spirit of singing with their voices, giving praises for the grace of God in their lives. Describing songful worship in summary as a medium to minister to one another and to express love and gratitude to the Lord. Songful worship can be sung jointly with fellow believers, and it can be sung privately as a means of personal devotion to God. However, believers enjoy fellowship with one another when every member participates in group singing. The word, “singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” means that songful worship is to come from the heart that is directed to the Lord, while indirectly warning that God is not seeking to be entertained. It is not right to assume that God who is spirit (John.4:24) is looking for outward performances. God is not looking for outward performance but inward praises. While it is not wrong for Christians to entertain themselves, it must not be assumed that entertainment is worship. It must be noted always that God desires to listen to the hearts of His people more than their harps because harp symbolises external religious practice that lacks inner alignment with God. The Bible says, “Take away from Me the noise of your songs, for I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.” (Amos.5:23) God values inner devotion over mere religious performance. God has given every individual the instrument of voice. Singing is often easier to memorise entire song than a small passage of the scripture. However, for singing to be effective tool of remembering God’s truth, the song has to be filled with biblical truth. It is only then that God is honoured, and the people are edified and exhorted. Brethren, worship is a daily reverence outpouring of one’s heart that is not confined to a specific location. It comes from the heart of one who respond to the daily presence of God in his life. Use your vocal instrument to praise, honour, adore and reverence God in worship in every opportunity that comes your way. May your praise, singing and devotion be acceptable by God in Jesus might name. Amen Evangelism There is no other name by which one can be saved. Jesus Christ is the only name.
