God has always wanted man to seek Him first because of His love for mankind. He always wants to be in relationship with man hence He was frequently visiting man in the garden of Eden. Despite God’s expression of love and established ammonal relationship with man, man separated himself from God. The Bible says, “Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God” (Gen.3:8b) God as a result of His enduring mercy and love did not stop loving man, instead He sent His only begotten Son to come and help restore man. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke.19:10) When a man believes in Jesus, he is saved and he is once again brough back to a renewed relationship with God. Jesus during His sermon on the Mount brings to man’s attention to seek the presence of God instead of the things of the world. He says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt.6:33) To seek first the kingdom of God is to make God priority over everything else. To seek and rely on God’s guidance in every aspect of once life endeavour and consistently submit to His will. Jesus says, when this is done, all the things that is required to live a fulfilled life would be added because our heavenly Father knows that we need all these things. (Matt.6:32) Ironically, it is common knowledge that mankind is now more preoccupied with material things than to seek the kingdom of God. The phenomenal of seeking what is created rather than the Creator is enormous even among believers of Christ so much that their love of the world reflects in the way God is preached, praised, worshipped and prayed to. The Bible says, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matt.6:10) Unfortunately, it is now a situation where individual consider their own desire outside of the will of God. This principle of “all these things shall be added to you” was displayed during King Solomon’s encounter with God in a dream where God told him to ask! What He shall give to him. (1 Kings.3:5-14) King Solomon in response asked that God give him an understanding heart to judge the people of God that he may be able to discern between good and evil. Solomon did not depend on his own understanding of his heart but that of God. And God was so pleased with him (vs.10) so much that the Lord says, “And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honour” (vs.13) He was also promised lengthen days if he keeps God’s statutes and commandments. King Solomon’s encounter with the Lord truly explains the fact that all other things shall be added if one makes God priority. Solomon was not only given God’s understanding heart he asked for, but also received riches, honour and possible increase in the length of his days. Dear brethren, the kingdom of God is internal and spiritual, not physical in the sense of being a domain. The kingdom is embedded in Jesus Christ, and it is available to each person who receives Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. The order to seek Him first is not about seeing Jesus Christ as the right or the best way, but to see Him as the only way. He has pledged Himself with covenant to respond by promising that “all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt.6:33b) God is not man that He should lie. May the Lord God grant you the grace to continually seek Him first that all the things that you need will be added in Jesus mighty name. Amen Evangelism Seek first the kingdom of God today. You can only experience the kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. Accept Him today as your Lord and Saviour. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
