Our Lord Jesus after His resurrection always appear to His disciples with the greetings, “Peace be with you.” (John.20:19-20) The peace of the Lord is an inner, emotional and spiritual peacefulness that cannot be expressed in words. The Bible describes it as a profound calmness of the spirit, mind, and heart that comes through Jesus Christ in a way which surpasses all human understanding. (Phil.4:7) It is a gift from the God of peace having obeyed the gospel and come into a covenant relationship with Him. The peace of God is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God which brings victory within the trouble. God’s promise is that His presence will strengthen, help, and uphold with His righteous right hand. (Isaiah.41:10) Believing the promise and such similar promises bring calmness of spirit, mind and heart. The proof of God’s presence within troubled situation could be seen in the story of the three Hebrew boys, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who were thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden idol. (Daniel.3:23-25) They were accompanied by an Angel of the Lord in the fiery furnace and were miraculously saved. Christians who are with the peace of God still enjoy the unseen presence of God in troubled situation through the power of the Holy Spirit. The peace of God in one’s life is dependent on one’s trust and confidence in Him. One who put his trust in God would not worry, knowing that it is God who is working all things together according to His purpose. (Rom.8:28) To worry or be anxious for something is doubting the ability of God. So, in order for one not to worry or be anxious, one should instead communicate to God in prayer and offer petition for help in a spirit of thanking God for all that He has done in one’s life. (Phil.4:6) When prayer is offered to God upon the basis of faith, believing that God will give answer to the prayer, then one will gain inner peace of heart and mind. A doubting mind does not have peace. The bible describes such mind as double-minded, unstable in all his way. (James.1:8) In addition to prayer and supplication, to have the peace of God requires living a life of integrity, humility, contentment, and honesty. It requires focus on things which are noble, right and to keep one’s mind on those things that are pure, lovely, virtuous and praiseworthy. (Phil.4:8) When one meditates on those things, his thought will be optimistic about life and there would be no room in his mentality for pessimistic thinking. It also requires that one understands and accepts that all things are under the control of the God who can do all things. When one’s focus is on things that are good and after the nature of God who is working all things together for good, then he sees the best things of life and the peace of God is with him. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let me leave you with this promising word of the Lord of peace. He says, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you, not as the word gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John.14:27) The peace of God is a gift which comes through Jesus Christ the God of peace. To have the peace of God is dependent on your trust and confidence in Jesus Christ. May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way in the name of Jesus. Amen Evangelism The Peace of God comes through Jesus Christ. Accept Jesus Christ as your saviour to have access to the peace of God. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
