“It is well” is a statement commonly said by Christians to express the state of their minds. Some say it to express their frustration, while some say it as prayer to console themselves during troubled circumstances. A Nigerian song writer, Buchi Atuonwu in his song to encourage believers to put their trust and hope in Christ sings with a chorus, “It is well x 3, in the name of Jesus, it is well with my soul today.” The statement is a declaration that is focused on the hope that difficult situation can turn around. The Psalmist described it as hopefully waiting in the word of the Lord because of His abundance mercy to redeem situation. (Psalm.130:5, 7) ‘It is well’ is a faith-based statement intended to align one’s expectation with positive outcome. The bible story of the Shunamite woman gave a good analogy of the statement, “It is well”. Twice she said “It is well” instead of pronouncing his dead son dead. When the husband asked her while she needed to go and see the man of God ahead of the scheduled period, she simply answered, ‘it is well’. (2 Kings.4:23) Even when the man of God who was surprised to see her at that unscheduled timing asked about the welfare of her family members including the dead son, (2 Kings.4:26) she answered in the same manner, “it is well”. Not until when she held the man of God by his feet that it was discovered that her soul was in deep distress. (2 Kings.4:27) She kept her hope alive in her speech and in her action. Aside from the fact that the Shunamite woman declares the word of hope, she also displays her faith in God in the manner she laid her dead son on the bed of the man of God before proceeding to inform him about the tragic incident. (2 Kings.4:21) Her action was an expression of faith and hope that the Lord that gave her the son can turn the situation around. And God truly did. For one to truly declare “It is well”, one’s courage must rest on the fact that he has made God his refuge and strength. He is not afraid because he has put his trust in the God who is found to be reliable and proven to be a reliable stronghold who is always present to help. (Psalm.46:1-3) Making God one’s refuge and strength require intimate relationship with Him. A relationship that is built on obedience to the word of God and believes the promises of God without doubt. Relationship that enables one to hold fast to one’s confession of the Lord Jesus Christ through whom one receives access to God the Father. (Eph.2:18) Brethren, when next you say the statement or sing the song, “It is well”, ensure that you are saying or singing it from the point of faith and hope that God can turn around whatever unpleasant situation you are passing through. Always remember, “It is well” is a confession of faith which is focused on hope that God can turn difficult situation around. May the good Lord turn all your unpleasant and difficult situations around as you make Him your refuge and your strength in Jesus mighty name. Amen Evangelism Jesus is the only Way to reach God. Accept Him as your Lord and Saviour and begin to enjoy personal relationship with God. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
