Count your Blessings

Verse one of the words of a popular song says, “When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” The song may be calling attention to faith that is troubled. Faith is troubled when the soul is feeling discouraged. When the soul is not sure about what he believes anymore. When the soul is confused and double-minded. At such time such soul needs encouragement by counting his many blessings. The psalmist said, such time was the time for his soul to bless the name of the Lord. Time to bless the Lord for all that the Lord has done for him in the past. How He has forgiven him his iniquity and healed him of sickness. How the Lord has saved his life from destruction through His mercies and lovingkindness. And how the Lord has renewed his strength. (Psalm.103:1-5) During the period that our faith is troubled, let us begin to count our many blessings one by one. Like David, let us remember that Jesus Christ has made a way for our compete forgiveness, healing and restoration of our lives. Remember how the Lord stopped you from traveling on a journey that could have ended up in an accident. A surprised favor that came your way that you are yet to know how to explain the wonder. How God in a miraculous way sent someone you never imagined to attend to your financial need through His supernatural provision. Remember how God strengthened you to overcome some difficulties in the past. How the plan of the enemy has continued to fail concerning you. When you count these blessings, you will truly be surprised at many things that the Lord has done. The prayer of our advocate, our Lord Jesus Christ is another blessing that helps our troubled faith. Jesus says, “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those you have given Me, for they are Yours” (John.17:9) His payer for us is that God the Father should keep us from the evil one. (John.17:15) Such prayer by our Redeemer is a blessing that cannot be quantified. Jesus prayed for Peter in a similar situation. He told Peter “But I have prayed for you that your faith should not fail, and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren” (Luke.22:32) Counting your blessings help your mind to come back into agreement with God’s Word. When your mind is in agreement with God’s word, your Joy will come again and the trying moment that is troubling your faith will disappear as you remember once again what God has already done. Trusting that He will do again what He has done before knowing that, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James.1:17) To encourage your faith, always count your many blessings, name them one by one, you will see what God has done.
