Anxious Spirit in Christian Life

Anxious spirit can be described as a feeling that deals with thoughts, ideas and beliefs about where one stand with God. It is a thought that usually give rise to questions about the nature of one’s existence which spirituotherapist referred to as “Sacred Anxiety”. The word of God defines anxious spirit as putting one’s trust in man, make flesh his strength, and take one’s heart away from the Lord (Jer.17:5). An action that contradicts the word of God that says we should look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2a). One may not be wrong to say that anxious spirit in the life of a Christian as a result of much thinking on what to eat, drink and what to put on is self-inflicted. Jesus Christ says life is more than food and that the body is more than cloth. Jesus Christ warned against worry. He says “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more that clothing?” (Matt.6:25) Jesus being the author and finisher of Christian life says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt.6:33) The only way one can handle anxious spirit is to come to Jesus Christ who has come to save man from every oppression. Come to Him in truth and in faith and trust His words. The scripture expressed the fact when it says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm.55:22). Jesus Christ is the mighty hand of God that can solve the problem. Apostle Paul in his letter to the brethren in Philipp says, “Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”. (Phil.4:6-7). The scripture is saying, instead of you to be anxious, go to God in prayers that is based on faith that you will receive what you are asking God for. When this is done, instead of getting worried, the peace of the Lord (not anxious spirit) will full your hearts and mind. In conclusion, the scripture says “Blessed is the man who trust in the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit” (Isaiah.17:8). Jesus Christ is that river that guards our hearts and mind to which we can put our trust which is the root of our Faith. When we put our trust in Him, we are not influenced by the worldly troubles and circumstances around us. Evangelism: If you are reading this piece and you have not accepted Christ, I urge you to visit a Bible believing Church around you. By so doing, you will know Him, and you will begin to enjoy the peace of God that surpass all understanding. Jesus will meet you there. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
