Doubt is one of the tools of the devil to separate believer from Jesus Christ. It makes believer not to believe or accept the truth of God anymore. Doubt is a threat to believer’s faith. Doubt can be described as suspension of one’s faith and relationship with God. It is a moment when one’s trust and believe is suddenly compromised. It can degenerate to unbelief. What doubt and unbelief have in common is they both come from evil heart. The good news however is that, doubt is a forgivable sin. Unbelief which is outright inclination not to believe Jesus Christ is the tool of the devil against the unbeliever. And the Bible says the sin of unbelief is not forgivable because he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John.3:18). We all at a point in time experience moment of doubt in our lives when we are overwhelmed by circumstances. King David and apostle Peter are examples of people of God that experienced moment of doubt in their lives. We remember how Apostle Peter denied Jesus Christ three times before the rooster crows. (Matthew.26:69-74) The bible says, “So he went out and wept bitterly” (Matthew.26:75) Peter cried for forgiveness when he realized his error. Concerning King David, (1 Sam.30:1-20) the Scripture says, “Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more power to weep. (1 Sam.30:4) David a man of war, a king, and a man after the heart of God, wept as a result of what can be descried as emotional doubt caused by the great distress he was going through at that moment. But he strengthened himself, went back to God (1 Sam.30:6-8) and eventually recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away including his two wives. (1 Sam.30:18) Apostle Peter and King David overcame their doubt and were restored back. Doubt comes when one abandon God and rely on one’s wisdom and understanding during trying moment. Whereas, such moment is when one needs the wisdom from God to have spiritual understanding of the purpose of the trial. The Bible says, “For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Prov.2:6) The scripture however warns that one needs faith to earn the wisdom of God. “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea tossed by the wind. For let that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord” (James.1:6,7) God does not deal with double-minded who is unstable in his ways, therefore, one needs to quickly overcome his doubt and restore his faith to receive required wisdom from God. To overcome doubt, the Bible advised that we should submit to and obey God. Resist, and stand against the devil, and the devil will flee. We should draw near God at all times even during the trying moments and He will draw near us. We should purify our heart and not to be doubtful. (James.4:7-8) In addition, constant fellowship in the midst of caring brethren will help us to overcome doubt and remain faithful. Brethren, because of the thin line between doubt and unbelief, let us be mindful of the warning from the word of God, “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.” (Heb.3:12) If doubt lingers, it can degenerate to unbelief. May the Eternal Rock of Ages continue to deliver us from evil in Jesus excellent name I pray. Amen Evangelism Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and the devil will flee from you. Jesus is still saving people from the work of the devil. He is ready to save you. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
