Be mindful of your Word

The Bible says, if one does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man. (James.3:2) The word of God is laying emphasis on the gravity and the impact of word and the need to be mindful of what comes out of one’s mouth. What we say and how we say it. Our words may be an invitation to peace or invitation for war. Our Lord Jesus Christ summed it up by saying, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt.12:37) This is simply because, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his hearth brings forth good things and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. (Matt.12:34, 35) It simply means your word says much about who you are. Six things the Bible say the Lord hates, two of them have to do with the word we speak. They are, lying tongue and false witness who speaks lies. (Prov.6:17, 19) Lying tongues and false witness can damage relationship. It can also destroy families. It can cause depression and even loss of lives. Liars lie for self-edification. Some lie to people to make them happy. Some flatter others, while some brag and boast of accomplishments just to express their pride and depress their hearers. Some feel happy and proud when they say words that hurts someone else. The most common and most irritating is the use of foul language. Words that are regarded as obscene and unacceptable. Some are so imbibed in such words so much that it has become part of their life style. I plead to our merciful God to deliver such mouth, in the name of Jesus. Amen The Bible says, “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.” (Psalm.34:13) To keep our tongues from evil means to avoid words that does not glorify God, and to keep our lips from speaking deceit is to avoid words that are contrary to the word of God. In summary, it means saying things which one ought not. (1 Tim.5:13) Brethren, as follower of Christ and one who is walking in the light, the Bible says we should put off filthy language out of our mouth (Col.3:8). In the same manner, it teaches that corrupt word should not proceed from our mouth, but the word that is good for necessary edification, that it might impact grace to the hearers. (Eph.4:29) Let us henceforth think before we talk. Be deliberate to desist from saying things which we ought not. We can also emulate Apostle Paul through self-discipline. He says “I discipline my body and bring it to subjection…” (1 Cor.9:27) We too can bring our mouth to subjection. By so doing, we will begin to speak pleasant words that are like a honeycomb which bring sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. (Prov.16:24) Remember, you have been warned, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Therefore, be mindful of what comes out of your mouth. Evangelism Let us preach the true word of God to invite the lost to the New Kingdom. Not filthy or idle words. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
