Anger is described as the manifestation of a sprit that is not yet brought under control by self-discipline. The Bible says, “Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools” (Eccl.7:9) Anger destroy someone’s thinking, becloud his emotion, rob him of his peace and put him in a state of anxiety that leads to self-destruction. Aside from anger causing self-destruction, most times the bitterness spread to those who are not the cause or part of the aggression, thereby impact established relationship negatively. The Bible says, “A man of great wrath will suffer punishment, for if you rescue him, you will have to do it again” (Prov.19:19) It means that anger is a weakness of the state of mind and it is prone to repetition. Anger leads to conflict, spread to others and dishonors God. The Bible says, “Be angry, and do not sin” do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” (Eph.4:26) The scripture highlights the fact that to be angry is not sin. However, uncontrolled anger leads to all sorts of sins. When one’s anger goes beyond limit, one becomes a contentious person kindling strife. (Prov.26:21) Kindled strife can lead to conflict and becomes a dishonor to God. An example of contention that kindles strife was the anger exhibited by the two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi against Shechem, the son of Hamor, over the rape of their sister Dinah. (Gen.34:1-29) The consequence of their anger caused trouble to their father. (Gen.34:30) That is how the bitterness of anger spread. “My beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James. 1:19, 20) The exhortation of the scripture is very crucial in the sense that those who cannot control their anger are not suitable to co-habit with others because they do not have the ability to peacefully dwell with others who may disagree with them. It concluded that anger of a man does not produce the righteousness of God because the man’s anger is the manifestation of his pride that leads him to be disobedient to the will of God. For one to overcome anger, the Bible say, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. Be kind to others with tenderhearted. Forgive others as God in Christ forgave you.” (Eph. 4:31) Knowing that anger can lead to sin, it is pertinent that one listen and think before he speaks. Not to allow temper to flare quickly. Not to harbor evil feelings toward others. Not to harbor angry disposition over length of time. One who harbored anger will give himself to emotional outbursts of uncontrolled noise making, shouting and ranting. Remember, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Prov.16:32) Dear brethren, I urge you to take a deliberate decision today to rule your spirit, and pray the Holy Spirit to help you put your anger under control. May the Lord that answers prayers give ear to your request in Jesus mighty name. Amen Evangelism Put your anger against Jesus Christ under control and give your life to Him today. Your Christian friend can lead you to Him. Jesus Christ is waiting to receive you. Rev. Shobayo Kayode The Gospel Study Centre
