Let not your heart be troubled

Let not your heart be troubled was the word of encouragement Jesus spoke to His disciples in the aftermath of their feelings of loss and abandonment as a result of the announcement of His departure from their midst. (John.13:36-37) Considering that Jesus has always be with them, life without the physical presence of Jesus was unimaginable to them. Consequently, the announcement brought feelings of loss and abandonment. And Jesus knowing this, said to them, “Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Me.” (John.14:1) There is no doubt that there are times we find ourselves in a state of emotional trouble as a result of challenging circumstances. It may be as a result of failed promise or unexpected disappointment. Sometimes it is feeling of loss and abandonment or as a result of what is said or done to us. Yes, it can be very hurting and painful, but the fact remains that such situations are realities of human existence. The Bible says, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall not accept adversity? “(Job.2:10) The above question was the one Job asked his troubled wife during the trying moment of his life. Job’s story clearly show that his adversity was not as a result of his fault or inadequacy, neither did it come from God. It came from the Satan. Job’s question points to the fact that we should not let our heart be troubled for any reason, but should rather keep on believing God. The way Job’s story ended tells us that God uses adversity to correct His people as well as help them in their growth in life. All Job’s losses were replaced in multiple folds. While God has never been responsible for human suffering, He allows the situation and uses it to apply some corrective measures in their lives. The Bible says, “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present pain, nevertheless, afterwards it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Heb.12:11) This indicates that God knows the pain in suffering. He uses it as instrument to train His people and also offers comfort, hope and guidance in the suffering to accomplish His purpose in their lives. A trouble heart is emmeshed in fear that can lead to a feeling that there is no God. And the Bible says, the fool has said in his heart there is no God. (Psalm.14:1) It can make one not to find joy and can damage one’s relationship with loved ones and also with God, thereby resulting in loss of faith. It can also result in health issues associated with depression and anxiety. It can in summary take away one’s peace. No wonder Jesus promised to leave His peace with His disciples while reminding them again not to let their hearts be troubled. (John.14:27) Brethren, what can help one against troubled heart is to redirect one’s focus from the adversity towards Jesus Christ. Engage in prayers and thanksgiving that leads to deeper relationship with God. Always put to remembrance many excellent things that God has done in one’s life in the past and believe His words. Believing His Word is a tool to claiming His promises. Jesus says, believe in God, believe also in Me. I am urging someone to be doer of the word and not hearer alone by deliberately and intentionally believing God and believe also in Jesus Christ. To believe in God and believe also in Jesus is the antidote of troubled heart. Knowing that there is nothing difficult for God to do, be assured that He will bring to an end every troubled situation and restore His peace in every troubled heart in Jesus mighty name.
